Intro to Spanish

Intro to Spanish is a fantastic opportunity to familiarize students with commonly used vocabulary and basic conversational skills, before tackling the details of grammar taught in Spanish 1.  Language will be presented through monthly themes and reinforced through fun games, songs, worksheets, and Quizlet.  Students will activitely engage in conversation together to practice common sentence frames that they can apply the vocabulary to, while learning frequently used irregular verbs and their proper application.  The goal of this class is to build a solid foundation of vacabulary to help demystify second language acquisition and ease the transition into Spanish 1.  Monthly themes will vary from year to year, so younger students may repeat the class to continue to build and grow their vocabulary and fundamental conversational skills.  By the end of the year, students will be able to introduce themselves and share details about their family, hobbies, and favorite things (food, colors, animals) as well as discuss the date, seasons, weather, and time.  Music, art, holidays, and food of Spanish-speaking countries will be shared quarterly to grow awareness of the culture.  Approximately 1.25 hours of homework per week to reinforce and aid in the memorization and learning of vocabulary and sentence frames.

Eliana Reece was raised in a bilingual home speaking Portuguese and English. She obtained Bachelors degrees in both Spanish and Film from California State University, Long Beach. She feels that as our world grows smaller each day, the ability to communicate effectively and meet people where they are is increasingly important; speaking more than one language can help facilitate that connection. She and her husband have 3 children; their sons are college students and their 6th grade daughter is homeschooled.
