American Sign Language 1

This will be a two-part class. The first part is focused on the language. We will learn vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. This will be reinforced through games, activities, and projects. The second half is focused on deaf culture. We will learn about the values, rules, and traditions of their culture through film. 

Homework is approximately 1-2 hours a week.

Materials needed:  A Basic Course in American Sign Language text and student guide by Tom Humphries, Carol Padden, Terrence J. O’Rourke

 Deaf Culture in Film: Activities for ASL Classes by Dr. Allyson P. Hamilton and Dr. Damara G. Paris. 

These books will also be used in ASL 2.

Teacher Biography

Kathy Hammond holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas Women’s University in communication sciences and disorders with an emphasis in deaf education. She is an experienced ASL teacher and has been homeschooling her five children for 15 years.
