Eleventh Grade

Chemistry

This class will cover high school chemistry.  It will introduce the periodic table, atomic theory, stoichiometry, reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, etc.  This class includes a lab with lab reports and is intended to prepare your student for rigorous college-level chemistry courses. 

Labs will be conducted in class with a lab partner.  Homework will be collected weekly and tests will be conducted every other module (there are 16 total for the year), with grades posted quarterly.

Biology

This class will cover high school biology topics: Cells, DNA, protein replication, osmosis/diffusion, dissections, ecology, carbon and nitrogen cycles, using a microscope, classification, etc. The goal is to provide the student with a broad introduction to science as it pertains to living organisms and give them the background needed to succeed in a college level biology course.

Spanish 2

Spanish 2 for high school students only; pre‐requisite Spanish 1. With increased Spanish discourse, elementary literature, and other collaborative opportunities, this class will further develop verbal fluency and grammatical understanding in a fun, engaging environment. Additional investigation of history, geography, and customs of Spanish‐speaking countries will aid in student's appreciation for and acumen of the language and culture. Approximately 1.5‐2 hours of weekly homework assignments will expand upon, reinforce, and solidify classroom learning.

Spanish 1

Spanish 1 will complete the full curriculum within the school year; it is recommended that students have a grasp of essential English grammar rules (parts of speech, verb tenses, etc.) prior to taking this class. Supplemented with music, games, role playing, and collaborative opportunities in the classroom, this class will balance verbal fluency with grammatical understanding in a fun, engaging environment.  Geography and cultural studies of Spanish-speaking countries will also be incorporated.

American Sign Language 3

The goal of this class is to immerse students into the language. We will learn some new things and expand and reinforce the skills we have already learned (such as maps, sequencing, and receptive comprehension). Students will work to comprehend material in ASL.

Government/Constitution (Spring Semester Only)

The goal of this spring semester class is for students to gain knowledge of the United States Constitution.  This will be accomplished by spending 10 weeks watching and discussing Constitution Alive hosted by Rick Green and David Barton of Wallbuilders.  We will spend the rest of this semester studying the signers of the Constitution and other interesting Constitution information.  Students will be asked to choose a signer of the Constitution and write a paper on the person.  Grades will be based on participation.

Speech Class/Public Speaking (Fall Sem Only)

This class covers the 1/2 credit of speech required for high school.  This IEW class will help your students become powerful communicators.  It will cover the general characteristics of good speaking as well as the specifics for organizing, planning, and delivering various types of speeches.  Introductory, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive speeches will be covered.

High School Writing 1 IEW/Research Paper

This class will focus on basic high school and college writing skills.  Students will learn how to write an academic essay, and will complete a research paper.  If you plan to go to college, you must know how to write well.  If you don't plan to go to college, you still must know how to write well!  We will work on figuring out what to write, how to form a thesis statement, how to make an argument, and how to organize an essay.

American Literature

This class will take students through the major authors and movements of American literature, from the Colonies to the modern age.  This is a low-stress approach to literature and will focus on helping the students learn to read well and closely.  We will put each work we read into its historical and social context, so that we can better understand he author's perspective.  My goal is that students learn to love literature!
