Description: Book Club will provide a way for students to engage in critical thinking and reflection as they read, discuss, and respond to books. Besides digging in to the literature and learning to deeply discuss the books, students will learn to assume and practice various roles during the book club discussion such as: discussion director, vocabulary detective, researcher, connector, etc. This class will also have a public speaking component in that the students will receive instruction in basic presentation skills. They will be given the opportunity several times per semester to practice those skills by preparing and presenting a book project or book review in front of their classmates.

About the Teacher: Bridget Williams holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. She is certified in K‐8 Education with additional endorsements in Gifted and Talented Education, Early Childhood/Exceptional Children and Special Education (K‐12). Bridget has 10 plus years of classroom teaching experience in both public and private schools plus 21 years of homeschooling. During her years of schooling her own children, she also taught a variety of homeschool classes in the community. Bridget loves to read and appreciates great literary works, especially classic literature for children and young adults. She has a passion for teaching and particularly enjoys teaching classes in the Language Arts. She hopes to ignite a love for reading in her students and inspire them to read great literature and to become confident writers.

Description: In this course students will use the IEW writing method to take notes and create simple outlines, summarize narrative stories, construct a mini research report and compose creative essays. This approach to learning to write provides the structure that students need in order to develop confidence in the writing process. Additionally, stylistic techniques (strong verbs, quality adjectives, use of adverbial clauses, sentence openers, etc.) will be taught incrementally to move students from the basics to more sophisticated writing. This class will also have a Grammar Review and Vocabulary Development component.

Materials needed: All Things Fun and Fascinating‐Writing Lessons with Structure and Style by Lori Verstegen – (Student Book – 2nd edition) ISBN #: 978‐0‐9801005‐2‐5, 1.5‐inch 3 ring binder with 8 tabbed dividers, zippered pencil pouch insert for notebook to hold vocabulary cards, highlighters (3 colors), one package of 3x5 notecards.
