Description:  For those of you who don’t necessarily like traditional math, or maybe it isn’t your favorite subject, this class is for you. For those of you who do like math or it is your favorite subject, you will be just fine as well. This class is for everyone. There is some math in this course – statistics does use numbers to help justify or disprove your case – but the level of traditional mathematics is lower than you might expect. We will not put our “Algebra Hats” on very often.

This course is a basic introduction in the concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. There are four broad conceptual themes that we will be studying. They are:

(1) Exploring data – observing patterns and departures from patterns,
(2) Planning a study – deciding what and how to measure,
(3) Anticipating patterns in advance – producing models using probability and simulation, (4) Statistical inference – confirming models.

Students will use statistics as a tool to solve a variety of problems in all areas, including but not limited to political science, economics, sports, ecology, law, life and physical sciences. In addition, other modeling techniques will be explored including the study of dynamical systems. Extensive use of the calculator is included. Oral and written communication skills are emphasized.

Materials Needed: Graphing calculator required (TI 84 preferred)
