Through clearly drawn characters and a plot on target for today's teen society, Stealing Time tells the story of 17-year-old Ross' dealing with the pressures of peer power, maniplation, and a dangerous test of his courage and character. He is new in town and the high school and trying to cope with the death of his father. He cannot yet refocus on academics, but he does know that life continues to flow around him. He is not ready to become a part of it again. He is intelligent, introspective, and attractive in a jock sort of way. His chance meeting with Claire brings him into sinister Ted Bartle's orbit and marks Ross as Bartle's next pawn to achieve a point ... the fair Claire. Ted Bartle is wealthy, smooth and mean-spirited. To be a member of his group is to be controlled, involved in seemy happenings, theft and worse. He plots and ensnares Ross. Claire is level-headed and knows much about Bartle. She feels the rest; including his responsibility for her brother's death. Having gone through a similar depression as Ross, she understands his feelings and reaches out to him. Her support enables Ross to begin to relate again; first to her, later in an attempt at friendship with a fellow male student, who ultimately saves his life. Teens will be captured and held by realistic characterization, Ross' inner turmoil, and a fast-paced action-line. Important underpinnings of friendship are clear: caring, communicating, valuing and supportive action. Professor and Chair in the Department of Elementary Education at Queens College, New York, Dr. Sloan directs and teaches in the Children's Literature Specialization within the Master's Program. She is a recognized author in academia, an activecommitteewoman and board member of the NCTE, and on the Board of Directors of The Children's Literature Association of the MLA. Stealing Time is her first novel.

My Lee Comes To America is written for the eight to ten year old elementary school student who has contact with an English as Second Language program as a student of the program, is a student in a school housing an ESL program, or is a student in a school that has a number of students from other than English-speaking homes. The story is about a Hmong family recently arrived in America whose traditions and way of every day life are drastically different from the ways of their new home. Moving into a mixed neighborhood and enrolling the children in a school with an ESL program begins the family's adaptation to new ways while maintaining their own traditional ethical and moral values. The problems of being accepted into the neighborhood are explored, as are male/female roles and expectations, the family view of education in general and for girls in particular, and the problems involved for the children and the adults by not speaking English. The reader's perspective is little My Lee, who acts for us as a bridge between the two worlds of her family. Intelligent and respectful, her experiences and her thoughts about them show us problems in the making and their thoughtful resolutions. While demurring to her older brother and his role, she is personally very concerned with making friends and participating in school activities which in America are normal for all students, but frowned upon for girls in her family's culture. She desperately wants to learn to play a musical instrument ... the violin.
